Storm encore does even more damage: families, motorists trapped, road collapses, trees down

Rescue teams hustled throughout the county — rescuing motorists on Pleasantview and Summit avenues in Hackensack, Terhune Avenue in Lodi and Carteret Place in Allendale, among other areas — in a flurry of emergency activity that began just after 8 p.m. and continued for well over an hour.

All southbound lanes of Route 17 in Saddle River and East Rutherford were closed due to flooding after several people were rescued. Route 46 in Lodi was closed in both directions. Grand Avenue in Montvale was closed after a section of road reportedly collapsed.

The center of town in Emerson was also underwater — as was Passaic Street in Garfield (SEE PHOTO, above, courtesy Rhiannon Reinert).

Meanwhile, manholes were popping on West Forest Avenue in Teaneck, wreaking havoc on drivers.

Nearby, firefighters from no fewer than four departments battled a three-alarm blaze on Phelps Avenue in Englewood. One of the ladder trucks got stuck in the mud, so firefighters hopped onto another.

A tree fell outside the Glen Rock train station. Branches on the tracks shut down rail service between Glen Rock and Waldwick.

Also in Glen Rock, a tree also fell onto a house on Midwood Road and another on top of car on Grove Avenue.

In Ridgewood, an underground electric utility vault took on water and shorted out, causing a small, smoky electrical fire that shut down East Ridgewood Avenue between Walnut Street and Cottage Place. Power wasn’t lost, but PSE&G said it wasn’t sure whether it could have the repair work completed before tomorrow’s scheduled Fourth of July parade (By Boyd A. Loving).

And a car overturned on Ridge Road in Lyndhurst.

A boat was reported “in distress” on River Road in Edgewater. The Park Ridge family was rescued by firefighters.

Power lines toppled in Waldwick.
