Arthur Lomando, 44, apparently had been waiting for some time for Suzanne Bardzell before attacking her with a large "Rambo-styled survival knife" when she pulled into her driveway -- all of it captured on video, a law enforcement source said.
Bardzell might not have suspected trouble, the source said, because Lomando -- who was under a temporary restraining order -- drove a rental car to her Godwin Avenue home after leaving his own vehicle behind in Hackensack.
Earlier this month the discovery of Lomando's abandoned car outside her home ignited a massive search involving no fewer than 18 police agencies and eventually ended after he called his lawyer to surrender. He later posted bail and was released.
Authorities recovered the rental in Harlem after Lomando threw himself in front of a subway train Thursday, costing him both feet (SEE: Prosecutor: Ex-Officer Who Killed Midland Park Mom Tries Subway Suicide).
They also recovered his car in an area of River Street in Hackensack where a trio of rental agencies are located, a law enforcement source with direct knowledge of the discovery told Daily Voice.
Lomando remained under police guard in Harlem Hospital Center.
Bardzell and Lomando were in court in Hackensack on Oct. 19, three days before she was killed, for a final hearing on her request for a permanent restraining order.
The hearing was adjourned -- with the temporary order still in effect -- after both asked for more time, a courthouse source told Daily Voice.
"They were both calm and reasonable in demeanor and there was no sign of any trouble,” the source said.
Local houses of worship scheduled an ecumenical community-wide service tomorrow to pray for Bardzell's family and friends -- and for the emergency service members who responded to the call.
The prayer vigil will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. at the pavilion at Wortendyke Park on Englishman Drive. Parking is available at the commuter lot on Streelman Way.
