Small fire ignited by Paramus downed wire, tree nearly hits Ridgewood house

LOCAL SANDY: A motorist was reportedly trapped in a car struck by a downed tree in Alpine just bfore 1:30. Earlier today, a downed high tension wire triggered a small brush fire on Paramus Road near Kramer Drive in Paramus, and a fallen tree grazed a house in Ridgewood.

Power outages were reported in the area as a crew from PSE&G worked with personnel from Paramus FD Engine Company #1 to extinguish the 10 a.m. fire before replacing the wire.

Paramus Road was closed both northbound and southbound between Jay Drive and Linwood Avenue for approximately 45 minutes.

Ridgewood and Paramus police assisted with traffic control.

Meanwhile, a fallen tree grazed a house in Ridgewood in the 500 block of East Saddle River Road.

Chris Christie said, just after noon. “Everyone should be asking themselves if the trip they’re thinking about making is absolutely necessary, or if, once you’re out on the roads, you’re going to feel as if you made a huge mistake.” He urged citizens to remain calm and to use common sense to prevent deaths. Crews from the Village of Ridgewood’s Shade Tree Department blocked off a section of East Saddle River Road as they cut the fallen tree into small sections and fed it into a chipper/shredder.
