The search conducted by the Bergen County Rapid Deployment Force forced the cancellation of several area events while authorities searched in vain for more than seven hours.
"No one was really sure whether he had a gun," one law enforcement official said.
Daily Voice learned late this afternoon that the Suffolk County officer's attorney was in touch with authorities to arrange his surrender to the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office soon after the search ended around 3 p.m.
The man went missing around 1 a.m., Midland Park Police Chief Michael Powderley confimed.
A drone was sent up with negative results, he said.
Earlier report from responders at the scene that a boy was missing were incorrect.
