Joseph Caputo, 28, faces charges of leaving the scene of an accident, driving under the influence, reckless driving and failing to report a crash, among other offenses, Ridgewood police said this morning.

Caputo’s 2005 Jeep slammed into the pole on North Maple Avenue near Meadowbrook Road just before 5 a.m. last Wednesday, a police report says.

Caputo then “drove the damaged vehicle down Meadowbrook Road and left the vehicle near Vesta Court,” Detective Chris McDowell said.

Police found him walking south on Maple, carrying heroin, McDowell said. He was processed and released pending an appearance in Ridgewood Municipal Court.

Caputo had been arrested on drug-related charges less than eight hours earlier in Waldwick, McDowell said. That’s where Ridgewood police found him after going to a Dayton Street residence on a call that Caputo had overdosed, the detective said.

Village police charged him with drug possession and with being under the influence in that incident, then turned him over to their Waldwick colleagues.
