Jose M. Acevedo-Herrera, 23, of Kearny, was released yesterday after spending three days in the Bergen County Jail once the new charges were filed.
Acevedo-Herrera had been free on bail following his Feb. 18 arrest outside his home by Upper Saddle River police when he was charged again.
Authorities in Wayne have also issued a warrant for his arrest.
Mahwah police have charged him with several thefts, and last last week Ramsey followed suit.
“He hit a few places in town, same as in Upper Saddle River,” taking tires and rims, Ramsey Police Chief Bryan Gurney told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning.
Acevedo-Herrera, who worked on cars in his native Dominican Republic, already was on the radar of Ramsey and several other area departments when he was nabbed by Upper Saddle River police.
At just about all of the dealerships, employees opening in the morning found vehicles on cinderblocks. In Upper Saddle River alone, police said, 20 sets of tires valued at more than $100,000 were swiped and sold on Craiglist.
First, he broke the vehicles’ windows to steal the lug-nut keys, police said. Then he jacked up the vehicles, put them on cinder blocks and made off with the wheels.
Within two days, police said, the items were on Craiglist.
A fingerprint processed by the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Identification at one of the victimized dealerships helped crack the case, CLIFFVIEW PILOT has learned. Police also have surveillance videos and the online postings.
All told, Ramsey police charged Acevedo-Herrera with:
- 2 counts of burglary (entering structure)
- 7 counts of theft
- 3 counts of criminal mischief
