Ramsey buildings evacuated after crash into gas meters

UPDATE: A woman backing into a Ramsey garage put it in drive instead and crashed her car into two gas meters at the base of a feeding pipe, forcing the temporary evacuation of 25 stores and the apartments above them.

A portion of Main Street was closed, and evacuations ordered, after the car crashed into the Allstate building just after 11 a.m.

The woman wasn’t injured, said emergency responders.

Among those responding: Engines from Allendale, Mahwah Co. 1, Wyckoff Ladder and a Mahwah FAST team.

PSE&G initially couldn’t get to the broken pipes because the vehicle was wedged on top of them. Shutdown was delayed until workers could uncover the turnoff valve under Main Street.
