A Port Authority officer stopped the black Audi around 7 p.m., the authority’s Joseph Pentangelo said. A check of his license plate turned up an active warrant, he said. Suddenly, the driver hit the gas and roared off, followed by the Port Authority police cruiser, Pentangelo said.
The Audi sideswiped another car and blew the tire, but the suspect kept driving, exiting Route 78 in Newark, he said.
The driver then stopped the car and ran onto Fabyan Place, where he was grabbed by authority police with help from New Jersey State Police troopers.
Fareed Norman, 35, of Newark, has a suspended driver’s license and several warrants out of various jurisdictions, Pentangelo said. He was jailed and his car impounded.
State Police arrested Norman last July, saying that he had a a 9mm semiautomatic handgun, 1,625 decks of heroin and $18,700 in cash when he was busted.
He was out on bail when he was arrested last night and charged with eluding on foot, eluding with a motor vehicle, reckless endangerment and bail jumping.
