Police couldn’t initially say for sure that the man was returning to the nearby Fair Motel after going to the Mobil convenience store when he was struck by a Dodge Caravan at 1:15 a.m., Detective Lt. Edward Kane told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

“He made it across the northbound lanes and then cleared the divider before he was struck,” Kane said.

An emergency responder with direct knowledge of the incident said the man had forgotten his money and was running back to the motel to retrieve it when he was struck by the first vehicle and then hit by another.

The Bergen County Police Department Medical Examiner pronounced him dead at the scene, the lieutenant said.

The driver was taken to The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood with a left wrist or hand injury, he said.

Ramsey and Saddle River police assisted.
