The string of events began when Saddle Brook and Rochelle Park police, along with the Bergen County Police K-9 unite, responded to a 1:29 a.m. burglar alarm at a Saddle River Court home, Kugler said.

It took less than 20  minutes for one of the officers to spot a suspect in a nearby park, he said.

The officer chased him to Saddle River Road, where a Rochelle Park officer grabbed him, Kugler said. Rochelle Park Police Sgt. Daniel Urban was handcuffing him when a 2009 Audi rammed the rear of his cruiser, which was stopped in the northbound lane, the chief said.

Urban and the suspect — identified as 24-year-old Kenneth B. Arch III of Saddle Brook — were knocked to the ground by the cruiser, Kugler said. Both of them and the driver, 23-year-old James Galbo Jr. of Saddle Brook, were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center and were released soon after, he said.

Meanwhile, investigators are recreating the accident to determine exactly what happened.

Arch was being treated,

under police guard, at Bergen Regional Medical Center in Paramus. Bail was set at $2,500 on a weapons possession charge for a knife police said he was carrying. Additional charges could follow once the burglary investigation is complete, Kugler sa id.
