Various schools hold their drills on different days. Today Northern Highlands took its turn going to “Code Red.”

The exercise, which began at 9 a.m., was planned “well in advance with members of our local police departments,” district officials said in a statement.

Officers from Allendale and Upper Saddle River were on hand to observe, they said.

“Rest assured that in addition to drills like these, we have and will continue to evaluate our emergency plans in order to improve efficiency in response to any potential scenario,” the statement said.

“It is the intention of all members of our school community — students, teachers, parents, law enforcement, and school district personnel — to provide a safe, secure, comfortable, and substance -free learning environment,” officials said. “Our students, faculty, staff, and community deserve no less.”
