Mahwah townhouse partially collapses after fast-moving fire

The partial collapse followed a fast-moving fire that ripped through the upper floors of the Society Hill building after breaking out just after 9:30.

An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported that a resident was injured. She got out safely.

Firefighters already were up against it — having been stuck at a Boy Scout camp on Route 20s after a bridge was damaged during a fire there, temporarily leaving them on the other side of a creek.

But mutual aid backed them up — beginning with a squad that raced to the condos from Suffern, followed by units from Allendale, Ramsey and Wyckoff.

Firefighters, who initially entered the building and moved onto the roof, retreated and worked from the roof of a townhouse next door so that ladder trucks could douse the upper floors of the structure.

Soon after, the roof caved in.
