The officer began following Efriam M. Nussbaum, 23, after he changed lanes in the Holland Tunnel in a black 2015 Infinity around 1 a.m., the authority’s Joseph Pentangelo told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning.
After taking the St. John’s Rotary onto southbound Varick Street, Nussbaum turned onto eastbound Laight Street, where the officer activated his overhead lights and tried to pull him over, Pentangelo said.
That’s when Nussbam turned right onto Sixth Avenue, headed into oncoming traffic.
The officer tried to warn him through his overhead speaker that he was driving the wrong way, but Nussbaum continued on before the Infinity slammed into a Toyota Camry at the corner of Beach Street and West Broadway, Pentangelo said.
The other driver, a 34-year-old man from Queens, was trapped and had to be extricated by Port Authority bridge and tunnel agents before he was taken to Bellevue Hospital with back and neck pain and breathing difficulty.
Nussbaum was taken into custody on charges of fleeing, reckless driving, reckless endangerment and aggravated unlicensed operation.
The SUV was impounded.
