Officers alerted by a store manager found 29-year-old Daniel L. Cromwell of Queens man hiding in a nearby garage Monday afternoon, Police Chief Benjamin Fox said yesterday.
Cromwell tried buying three $200 gift cards, but the credit cards he presented didn’t clear, Fox said.
“He told the manager that he would go out to his car for another card, which is when she contacted police,” the chief said.
Officer Ryan Noon was in the store when Cromwell returned — and then bolted, leaving his flip-flops behind, Fox said.
He then tried hiding his wallet in the bumper of car in the parking lot before ducking into a nearby neighborhood, he said.
Midland Park police helped their Wyckoff colleagues search for Cromwell, who “was discovered hiding in a Clinton Avenue garage,” Fox said.
He was being held on $37,500 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with possession of 13 bogus credit cards that bore his name and numbers stolen from others.
He also was charged with possession of stolen property, obstruction of justice, resisting arrest, and criminal trespassing.
Fox said Cromwell “has an extensive history of arrests for fraud in both New York and Georgia.”
