Cedar Grove contractor admits paying bribes for port contracts

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: Contractor Louis Gargiulo of Cedar Grove admitted in federal court today that he bribed an employee of a container ship terminal at Port Elizabeth to steer contracts his way.

Gargiulo, 58, said that while he was a principal owner of LG II general contractors, he paid $18,000 in kickbacks to Donald Olesky, then the director of facilities maintenance at Maher Terminal, in exchange for $300,000 worth of taxpayer-funded work.

U.S. District Judge Freda L. Wolfson set sentencing for May 18 in her courtroom in Trenton. She also will sentence Olesky, who previously pleaded guilty to taking the bribe.

U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishmancredited special agents of the FBI’s Trenton Field Office for the investigation that led to today’s plea, negotiated by Assistant U.S. Attorney Harvey Bartle of Fishman’s office in Trenton.
