Scott A. Forbes, 42, who has homes in Upper Saddle River and on Long Beach Island, owes $125,000 — much of that to Glen Rock Lumber, said prosecutors who are seeking an order of restitution, in addition to possible prison time.
Officially, the indictment charges Forbes with eight counts of issuing bad checks and one count of theft.
The 6-foot-2-inch, 210-pound Forbes — a married Park Ridge native who has built dozens of homes in Bergen County — originally was admitted to a pre-trial intervention program last year, with the provision that he satisfy $262,000 that he promised a Superior Court judge in Hackensack he would pay for masonry and other work on several job sites.
His agreed-upon payments were to have been $1,000 per month for first 6 months beginning Nov. 30, 2010, eventually increasing to $2,000 a month as more work came in.
Had he satisfied the obligation, Forbes wouldn’t have had a criminal record. Instead, he pleaded guilty to a set of charges and was placed on probation for five years in October.
The indictment handed up today adds four more victims who prosecutors said were paid with rubber checks, boosting the outstanding amount.
Forbes, who once built multi-million-dollar mansions, lived a good life, with boats, luxury cars and fine furniture, as well as a game room packed with arcade games and billiards tables, a $9 million federal bankruptcy filing in U.S. District Court shows.
