The officers were patrolling the Saddle Brook section of the Saddle River County Park this afternoon when they noticed a car parked in a remote area, BCPD Capt. James Mullin told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Approaching the vehicles, they spotted the driver — identified as Khahlil Farid Hassan — recline his seat in what seemed an effort to hide from them, Mullin said.

The officers “detected the odor of burnt marijuana from inside the vehicle” and asked him to step out, the captain said.

At that point, Hassan “began to assault the officers,” Mullin said. “He also attempted to disarm the officers while resisting arrest.

After subduing him, the officers took Hassan to BCPD headquarters, where they charged him with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, DWI and possession of hashish. He was being held on $30,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail pending a court hearing.

Both officers sustained minor injuries, as did Hassan, who refused medical attention, Mullin said.
