“A cop’s cop and a great backup on and off the job,” New Milford Police Chief Frank Papapietro wrote of Schmidig. “He was my true friend and mentor….”

Many other police chiefs in Bergen turned to Schmidig for advice, as well, Papapietro wrote.

“It’s no secret that aside from his family he loved the Bergen County Police most of all,” he added. “All of us who knew him took something from his insights and street learned experiences.

“Bergen law enforcement will feel this loss for a long time.”
