ALLENDALE, N.J. – A Paterson man who barged into Allendale police headquarters demanding to know why a female friend was arrested was busted himself when officers discovered that he was wanted on a warrant, authorities said.

Officer Jamie Hillgardner stopped a red Honda Civic on Chestnut Street after 19-year-old housekeeper Krista Agosto of Paterson was unable to stay in her lane of traffic for several blocks, Police Chief George Scherb said.

Hillgardner smelled burnt marijuana and brought Agosto to headquarters, the chief said.

Soon after, Deon Goodwin, also 19, showed up in the police headquarters lobby, “demanding to know what was going on,” Scherb said.

Records show that Goodwin was wanted on a warrant out of Franklin Lakes after police there arrested him in July for having drugs in a motor vehicle after a Route 208 stop.

As the Allendale officers who’d learned about the warrant began to take him into custody, Goodwin began to resist, the chief said.

At the same time, Agosto began yelling and trying to interfere with the arrest, he said.

Sgt. Todd Griffith, Detective Michael Dillon and Hillgardner took both into custody.

Agosto was charged with obstruction, resisting arrest and drug possession. She also received motor vehicle summonses, Scherb said.

Goodwin, meanwhile, was charged with resisting arrest and with being under the influence of drugs. He was released, along with Agosto, after he posted bail for the other jurisdiction’s warrant, the chief said.

Both had hearings scheduled in Allendale Municipal Court.
