Witnesses on Friday night told officers responding to the 9 p.m. crash in the parking of the Bottle King on northbound Route 17 that the silver Ford pickup driven by Thomas Reilly had been weaving along the northbound highway moments earlier.

Reilly “was incoherent and did not respond properly to officers questions,” Police Chief Bryan Gurney said this morning.

Given his impairment and possible injuries, a paramedic unit from The Valley Hospital was summoned, the chief said.

“They reported that Reilly had constricted pupils and believed that he may [have been] under the influence of an opiate-based substance,” Gurney said.

Police found several syringes sticking from a backpack in the truck, he said, adding that officers also found four empty heroin folds in the bag.

Reilly was hospitalized and blood samples were taken before he was released with a court summons on charges of DWI, driving while under the influence of heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Just after 11 a.m. Saturday, Reilly went to headquarters to be processed and retrieve his truck.

While fingerprinting and photographing him, the officers searched Reilly, as is standard procedure.

The found the heroin and pills inside his jacket, Gurney said.

This led to addition charges of possession of heroin and the other two drugs.

After being released a second time, Reilly was again picked up on drug possession charges yesterday after being stopped yesterday.

He remained held on $7,500 bail in the Bergen County Jail.

He’s due in Ramsey Municipal Court a week from tomorrow.
