ALLENDALE, N.J. — Allendale police officers will look scruffier over the next few weeks while participating in No-Shave November to raise awareness of men's physical and mental health issues.

The campaign seeks donations from the participants and any community members.

The department had raised $420 as of Wednesday night.

“It’s a really important thing for everyone,” Sgt. William Kroepke told Daily Voice. “I don’t there’s anyone out there who would say they didn’t know someone who suffered from cancer.”

Allendale’s officers last month donned pink pins on their uniforms for breast cancer. The officers are growing out their goatees — department policy doesn’t allow beards, Kroepke said.

“At this point we’re just trying to get the word out,” he said. “We didn’t have a person or goal in mind — raising awareness is a good thing for everyone to do.

“It’s a fun way for us to have some camaraderie -- and laugh when some beards are more gray than others.”
