On his final day as the top federal law enforcer in New Jersey, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito took time to praise Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose, calling him a "national treasure." Carpenito cited Ambrose's "exceptional contributions to cooperative law enforcement" in New Jersey. “Through his leadership, we have benefited from an unprecedented level of cooperation and proactive participation in our efforts to suppress crime in the great city of Newark," the U.S. attorney said from his office in Newark. Over the past five years, he said, Ambrose has "transformed the Newark…

Justice Dept: NYC Allows ‘Anarchy, Violence, Destruction,’ Federal Funds In Jeopardy
New York City risks losing federal funding for “endangering innocent citizens” by allowing widespread violence and destruction and preventing police from doing their jobs, U.S. Attorney General William P. Barr said Monday. Portland, Oregon and Seattle were included in a list released Monday by the Justice Department of jurisdictions that “have permitted violence and destruction of property to persist and have refused to undertake reasonable measures to counteract criminal activities.” Shootings in New York City “have been on the rise since looting and protests began on or about May 28, 2020…

Knife Attack Motivated By Islamic Extremists, Body Cam Video Released
VIDEO: A Bosnian national illegally in the U.S. claimed he stabbed an NYPD officer in the neck and then shot at his backups in a videotaped incident because of his support for violent Islamist extremism, federal authorities said Wednesday. The revelation comes the same day that federal authorities in Brooklyn unsealed an indictment charging Dzenan Camovic with robbery and weapons offenses. The NYPD on Wednesday also released body camera video of the attack (see below). The surveillance video above shows Camovic rounding a Brooklyn street corner and slashing the unsuspecting officer’s neck…

The FBI late Monday afternoon officially identified Roy Den Hollander as the gunman who killed the son of U.S. District Court Judge Esther Salas and wounded her husband at their Middlesex County home. The body of Den Hollander -- who recently had a case pending before Salas -- was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the Sullivan County town of Rockland in New York State. "Den Hollander is now deceased," U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Craig Carpenito announced Monday afternoon while calling him the "primary suspect." The investigation was continuing, Carpenito emphasized. He asked a…

In advance of the Fourth of July, President Trump on Friday signed an executive order that he said promises “long prison terms” for those who vandalize American monuments, memorials and statues. “I just had the privilege of signing a very strong Executive Order protecting American Monuments, Memorials, and Statues - and combating recent Criminal Violence,” Trump tweeted. “Long prison terms for these lawless acts against our Great Country!” In another move, U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Craig Carpenito was appointed to co-lead a task force to counter anti-government extremists – specifically,…

President: Out-Of-State Agitators Hijacking Peaceful Protests Will Be Prosecuted
Peaceful protests across the country have been "hijacked by outside radicals and agitators exploiting the situation to pursue their own separate and violent agenda," Attorney General William P. Barr said Saturday. Meanwhile, President Trump called on "Liberal Governors and Mayors” to get “much tougher” in dealing with protesters “or the Federal Government will step in and do what has to be done, and that includes using the unlimited power of our Military and many arrests.” “Crossing State lines to incite violence is a FEDERAL CRIME!" Trump tweeted. Protesters rallied peacefully in Englewoo…

elated Directives Can't Treat Religious Groups Differently Than Businesses
Although state and local governments may issue coronavirus state-of-emergency directives, "there is no pandemic exception to the Constitution and its Bill of Rights," the Justice Department said Sunday. Federal authorities issued the statement in support of a Virginia church whose pastor was charged criminally with conducting a worship service attended by 16 people in a 225-seat sanctuary. But its message extends well beyond the specific case, as federal authorities continue examining state and local emergency orders to see whether they'd stand up to a constitutional challenge. The Lightho…

Feds Bust 400 Scammers Who Preyed On Elderly
Federal prosecutors throughout the U.S. have teamed up to charge more than 400 people in scams that have recently cost America’s senior citizens more than a billion dollars. The largest coordinated sweep of elder fraud ever was announced by U.S. Attorney General William P. Barr during a talk earlier this week aimed at protecting older Americans from financial harm. The event, “Keeping Seniors Safe,” was held – where else? – in Florida. The Sunshine State had the most prosecutions brought by federal authorities in the sweep: 21. Ranking second was New York State, with 18. The Southe…

Southern Gun Runner Who Supplied Newark Buyers Gets 2½ Years In Fed Pen
A weapons trafficker from South Carolina was sentenced Tuesday in Newark to a plea-bargained 2½ years in federal prison, part of a new Justice Department initiative aimed at reducing gun violence nationwide. Richard Lowman, 31, was at times accompanied by his uncle, ex-con Reginald Moultrie of Newark, during several meetings with one of the buyers, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito said. In another instance, he sold an assault rifle on a Newark street, Carpenito said. Lowman later sold six firearms in a city home after bringing them to New Jersey from South Carolina, the U.S. attorney said. …
