: Man Slain Near NJ City University Last Month Was Robbing Someone, Police Report
A 24-year-old man who was shot and killed at an apartment building near New Jersey City University last month was robbing someone there at gunpoint at the time, authorities said. The development came to light with the arrests of two men who investigators said were involved in the April 30 holdup but not in the death of David Jones, 24. Jones had a gun in his hand and was wearing a ski mask when police found him in the foyer of the College Street building after midnight, according to a police complaint. Iris Crystal Mercado, an Allentown mother, and New Jersey native, died from injuries sustained in a car crash on Sunday, March 31, authorities said. She was 37. Davauni Brown, who worked as an operation manager for the New York Red Bulls and lived in Newark, died on Thursday, Oct. 5 at the age of 31 after a long battle with a serious illness, the team announced. Brown was born in Kingston and migrated the United States as a teenager, according to his obituary. Thirty Professors Will Lose Their Jobs From NJ University Amid Cuts
New Jersey City University is laying off 30 tenured professors and 19 other faculty jobs as well as cutting 37 percent of its academic programs to help balance its budget, the university announced on Thursday, Dec. 15. The division of academic affairs will eliminate 48 undergraduate programs, 24 minors, 28 graduate programs, 10 certificate programs and one doctoral program, the outlet said. A 61-year-old track coach from Jersey City has been arrested on accusations he sexually assaulted a girl at a track meet in Ocean County, authorities said. Thomas Downes was at the John Bennet Athletic Bubble in Toms River when he "inappropriately touched" a minor female athlete participating in the meet on Saturday, Feb. 12, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. A standout college soccer star who went on to become a police officer, Julia Jeanette Caseres died Friday. She was 28. She had been battling a rare form of lung cancer, NJ.com reported.
