Route 17 Reopens After Early-Morning Car Fire A portion of Route 17 was closed early Tuesday, Aug. 6 after a vehicle erupted in flames. The East Rutherford Fire Department extinguished the fire that destroyed a Mazda sedan in the northbound lanes outside of the Lowe's complex around 8 a.m. There did not appear to be any injuries.

The fire apparently broke out on the first floor in back of the two-story Spruce Street building and instantly spread to the second floor and a cockloft -- trapping the victims -- shortly before 9:30 a.m. March 3. A vehicle just outside the brick structure also caught fire. A battalion chief reported heavy fire and smoke right from the get-go.
