Edward Schaefer was walking out of the headquarters when he saw smoke coming from a block away. Schaefer, a 20-year veteran and firefighter, ran to the Hillside Street home. Smoke poured from the house as he got the mother and kids out. Heroes: Suicidal Woman, 19, Rescued After Jumping From Palisades In Cliffside Park Cliffside Park firefighters rescued a distraught 19-year-old woman who plunged nearly 30 feet after jumping from the top of the Palisades in a suicide try Wednesday afternoon, authorities said. The woman was taken to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, responders said. She sustained a head and ankle injury and had various cuts and bruises from the fall, Police Capt. Vincent Capano said. Both Cole McKeon of Waldwick and Austin “AJ” Katchen of Cliffside Park were diagnosed months apart last year with Stage 4 neuroblastoma, a type of cancer that attacks certain types of nerve tissue. Before his first birthday, AJ had successful tumor resection surgery, the first of several operations. He’s also undergone chemotherapy that kept him hospitalized several months.
