His peers decorated Lauerwald's parking spot, #182, before class Monday morning with flowers and chalk messages that included “Not goodbye, it’s a c you later,” “We miss you" and "Fly High Brother.”
Friends have also begun raising money for bracelets and T--shirts to honor his memory. A GoFundMe fund totaled nearly $16,000 Monday morning.
A YouCaring/Memorial Scholarship Fund had raised more than $8,300 as of Monday evening, exceeding the $7,500 goal.
"I loved him," said friend Dylan Pfeifer, who met Lauerwald in Spanish class. "He was like a brother to me."
The district provided grief counselors for students, staff and family members, Schools Supt. C. Lauren Schoen said.
Mayor Bill Laforet posted a message on Facebook that read, in part: "No words can express our [community's] deep sense of loss....I want all of those involved to know that our community is thinking of them today, and will be there for you all during this tragic time."
Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal formally announced Monday afternoon that detectives from his Fatal Accident Investigation Unit were looking into the cause of the crash.
