"Getting up at 3 a.m. to head into New York City was a task that we gladly took on," Police Chief James Batelli told Daily Voice after the nationally televised appearance.

Joining them was Mayor William Laforet -- who distributed 650 "Support Mahwah Police" signs throughout the community -- and resident Susan Larsen, who convinced township officials to paint a blue line outside police headquarters.

“Each day, Mahwah officers are reminded of the support they have from the Mahwah community when they see the line,” Lt. Phil Tangel said.

Within hours of the live telecast, Batelli he was getting emails of support from as far as Michigan.

"What a great day," the chief said. "This is an experience they will always remember."
