Traffic backed up quickly on the highway, as Ramsey police, aided by members of the Ramsey Rescue Squad, shut the right lane of the highway so the cases could be offloaded.
NJDOT officials were reportedly responding to the scene, as were the Bergen County Police.
“It happens when trailers are overloaded,” one observer said after the collapse, which occurred just after 4 p.m. between the Swan Road exit and the train station.
“That and the snow load should have been cleaned off the top,” said another.
No other vehicles were reported damaged nor immediate injuries reported.
