Officer Ryan Hill pulled the four-door sedan over around 3 a.m. today for several moving violations, Police Chief James Batelli said.
Three men and a woman were inside, he said.
The driver, who initially identified himself as Ronald Westfield, smelled of alcohol, the chief said.
He said he didn’t have identification but gave police a date of birth and other information and said his cousin had rented the vehicle, Batelli said.
During a consented search, the officer found a Ziploc bag of “Spice,” a synthetic form of marijuana, as well as several open containers of alcohol, he said.
A passenger who identified himself as Tony Walker stated the drinks were his, Batelli said.
The third man identified himself as Sheldon Cooper, 28, of Port Jervis, N.Y., he said.
Police arrested the driver and took everyone back to headquarters.
There they learned that Westfield is actually Joseph Mann, 24, of Deer Park, and that Tony Walker is Scott Walker of Port Jervis.
A computer check found Mann’s driver’s license suspended, along with several active warrants for his arrest, the chief said.
Walker also had warrants, he said.
“During the interview Walker became belligerent and threatened to fight with the officer,” Batelli added.
NJSP trooper came to headquarters and took custody of Mann and Walker, he said.
Mahwah police charged Mann with hindering apprehension, DWI, refusing to take a breath test, driving with a suspended license and several traffic violations.
They charged Walker with hindering and disorderly conduct.
The third man, Sheldon Cooper, was charged with drug possession and released.
The female passenger was released without charges.
