Shoplifting suspects drove BMW, may be responsible for spree

CLIFFVIEW PILOT HAS IT FIRST: It isn’t every day that a pair of shoplifters make off with $1,250 worth of merchandise in, of all things, a BMW.

But they weren’t getting away from Mahwah police, who suspect they’ve cracked a string of heists with the arrests of two Brooklyn women.

Inside their car, a Mahwah officer found a bunch of Prilosec OTC boxes and Crest Whitening Strips in a black canvas bag – along with something even more interesting: A GPS device.

The device listed seven CVS stores, two Duane Reade stores, a dozen Wal-Marts and two Toys R Us stores in the NewYork/New Jersey area as recent destinations. Match that with a handful of Men’s Rogaine packages reported stolen from a Ramsey CVS and there’s the potential for a host of charges.

Mahwah detectives are now contacting their counterparts in all the other towns.

Their desk got the call at 9:30 Monday night from a CVS Pharmacy employee who described two women who made off with the goods in a white Beamer with New York license plates.

Moments later, Mahwah Officer Rich Albro spotted the car on Franklin Turnpike, where the driver suddenly turned into the driveway of a business and cut the lights, Capt. Stephen Jaffe said.

The passenger, 20-year-old Tiesha St. Martin, at first tried giving Albro bogus identification, Jaffe said. He arrested her and the driver — Latoya Payne, 23 – and charged both with shoplifting. St. Martin also was charged with hindering arrest for the phony ID, the captain said.

Both are due for initial appearances in Mahwah Municipal Court tonight.
