The first occurred when two robbers swiped a cellphone from a woman at the corner of Island Avenue and Washington Drive around 11-11:30 p.m. on July 25, Police Chief Bryan Gurney said Friday.

They took off in a dark-colored sedan – and may be responsible for a similar robbery in Fair Lawn that same night, he said.

The second victim was struck several times in the face and head with a handgun as he used an iPad while parked in the driveway of his East Crescent Avenue home around the same time of day on Aug. 2, the chief said.

The two bandits fled with the iPad, he said.

Two juveniles almost were the victims around the same time Thursday night, Gurney said.

They were walking south on Hart Street, using their cellphones, when three robbers pulled up in a dark-colored, four-door sedan.

The youngsters ran and got away as soon as the trio got out of the car, the chief said.

All of the robbers were described as apparently in their 20s, with slender and medium builds.

All wore dark clothing -- as well as black baseball caps with the letter “A” in script, Gurney said.

“It is obvious that the [robbers] are targeting victims that they are using cell phones, or other information technology devices,” the chief said. “If you have children, please advise them of this warning if they are out at night.”

He also asked citizens to “remain vigilant and report any sort of suspicious activity” immediately to his department: (201) 327-2400.

Gurney also asked that anyone with information that could the investigation call headquarters.
