Sgt. Michael Parise was monitoring northbound traffic just before midnight last night when he spotted the 2009 black Acura with Vermont license plates speeding near the Extended Stay Hotel, Police Chief Bryan Gurney said early this afternoon.
As the sergeant tried to pull him over, the driver — Identified as 44-year-old Lawrence Jackson of Proctor, VT — made an unsafe lane change before stopping at Williams Drive, he said.
Parise found Jackson in the passenger seat, Gurney said. He also smelled marijuana, he said.
Bergen County Sheriff’s K9 Officer Michael Anzaldo and his partner, Vaszko, responded and indicated the presence of drugs, the chief said.
Jackson then “admitted that there was marijuana inside the vehicle,” he said.
A search warrant also turned up 109 tablets of Suboxen (buprenorphine hydrochloride) and 138 Oxycodone tabs stamped “A 215,” as well as $5,895.06 in cash in the car, Gurney said.
He was arrested, and both the drugs and money were seized, he said.
Jackson was being held on $25,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail pending a hearing tomorrow night in Ramsey Municipal Court.
He was charged with distribution of a prescription drug and various possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia counts. Police also issued summonse for making an unsafe lane change and having drugs in a motor vehicle.
