PUBLIC SAFETY: Police were looking for two men in a grey car who they said approached two Mahwah middle-schoolers in front of the Ramapo Ridge School yesterday and asked whether they wanted candy.

When a teacher approached the vehicle, it left the area, Mahway Police Chief James Batelli said.

Officers checked the parking lots of the Ridge School and surrounding schools, as well as nearby corporate lots, after the 2:45 p.m. incident, but they said didn’t find any vehicles fitting the description of what witnesses said looked like a Saab, the chief said.

Suffern police stopped a car generally fitting that description a short time, but it had only one occupant and apparently wasn’t involved, he said.

The men were described as white, with brown hair. One was wearing glasses.

“The Mahwah Police Department will have patrol vehicles in the area of all the schools during dismissal time on Monday,” Batelli said in a notice that school officials distributed to parents.
