Officer David Vega pulled over the 1999 Kenworth tractor-trailer with Minnesota license plates for “various equipment violations” on Route 287 yesterday, Batelli said.
Vega obtained permission to search the rig after learning that the driver – 32-year old Evan Walsh of Kasson, Minnesota – had an arrest record for weapons violations, the chief said.
The officer found two handguns in the cab, he said: One, a Glock Model 32, was in the upper compartment and the other, a Glock 33, was on the floor of the passenger seat. Both were loaded with the illegal ammunition, the chief added.
As far as police know, neither gun was stolen, Batelli said.
Walsh was later released without bail pending a June 4 Municipal Court hearing on two counts of illegal gun possession and one of illegal ammunition possession, he said.
Batelli noted that Walsh was on his way to a business in town to have his truck repaired when Vega pulled him over. The result, he said, “underscores the availability of handguns and hollow-nose bullets that are possessed illegally.”
