Mahwah Police: Stolen Car Driver Tries Using Owner's License

MAHWAH, N.J. -- A Pennsyvlania man behind the wheel of a stolen car tried showing a Mahwah police officer who stopped him the owner's driver's license as if it was his own, authorities said.

Officer Tyler Boucher stopped the car Saturday afternoon on southbound Route 287 for an equipment violation, Sgt. Michael R. Blondin told Daily Voice.

After the driver handed him the license with a photo of a man who looking nothing like him, Boucher smelled marijuana and noticed that the ignition had been popped, Blondin said.

A check determined the car had just been reported stolen out of Ansonia, CT, he said.

Boucher arrested the driver -- identified as Victor M. Gonzalez, 18, of Steelton Pa. A subsequent search turned up a small amoung of marijuana, Blondin said.

A judge ordered Gonzalez held on $7,500 bail in the Bergen County Jail on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, hinderin and marijuana possession with the intent to distribute the drug.
