Police told CLIFFVIEW PILOT that they got the call at 10:17 this morning and rushed to the Marriott Courtyard on Route 17, where they found the 43-year-old man from Airmont, N.Y., perched on a second-floor balcony railing.
He had an eight-foot cord tied at one end around his neck and at the other secured to a railing post, they said.
“He was threatening to jump and was reporting being distraught over some personal matters,” Detective Capt. Stephen Jaffe said.
While Clancy spoke to him from the parking lot, Herbert went with three officers and a hotel employee to the man’s room, Jaffe said.
Once inside, Officers Michael Connington, Michael Blondin and Eric Larsen burst onto the balcony and grabbed hold of the man, the captain said. They cut the cord and struggled to get him inside, he said.
The man was handcuffed and taken by Mahwah Ambulance to Bergen Regional Medical Center, Jaffe said. Police also notified his family, the captain said.
