The other two should be in custody fairly soon, they said.
The quartet pulled into the BP Station on Franklin Turnpike in a four-door, black 2004 Hyundai Sonata just before 12:30 a.m. Saturday and asked for $30 worth of gas, Police Chief James N. Batelli said this afternoon.
As the vehicle was being fueled, the two back-seat passengers went into the station’s convenience store, followed by the attendant, Batelli said.
While they kept him busy, the front-seat passenger snatched the cash from a register in the attendant’s booth, he said.
The attendant tried chasing the fleeing vehicle after noticing the money gone, but it was too late.
Detective Kevin Hebert, Sgt. Michael Blondin, and Officer Keith Iorio reviewed surveillance video and conducted interviews, developing several suspects, the chief said.
Hebert and Iorio found the vehicle in Spring Valley and arrested the owner’s relative, 19-year-old Jonathan DaSilva (above, left), on burglary and theft charges, he said.
Earlier today they arrested the second defendant, Luis Rivera, 20 (above, right), also of Spring Valley, on theft charges, Batelli said.
Both were released without bail pending a first Municipal Court Appearance next Tuesday.
