Sgt. Stacy Conley and Officer Daniel Stewart responded to a call of a disturbance at a Route 17 gas station, where a dispute involved 25-year-old Abel Juarbe of Queens, Police Chief James N. Batelli.
The driver of a private bus that provides transportation to correctional facilities had stopped Juarbe from boarding because he appeared intoxicated, Batelli said.
Juarbe then “became argumentative and threatening to other individuals,” the chief said.
Conley and Stewart “attempted to talk to Juarbe and arrange for another means of transportation for him when he became belligerent and failed to adhere to [their] directions,” Batelli said.
As they began to arrest him for disorderly conduct, Juarbe “became combative, kicking both officers and resisting arrest,” he said.
Officers Richard Albro and Timothy Letavish arrived and helped subdue Juarbe, the chief said.
During the struggle Juarbe bit Conley on his left forearm. Albro also injured his left while trying to get him into a police cruiser.
Juarbe was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. A judge ordered him held in the Bergen County Jail pending a Sept. 15 first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack.
