MAHWAH, N.J. – The Ramapo Polo Club endured vandalism to “No Parking” and homeowners’ signs – as well as the bird-shot destruction of two historical streetlights -- until Mahwah police nailed a suspect.

After Polo Club members two weeks ago reported the sign vandalism along Halifax Road – as well as the street lights being shot out – township detectives began re-interviewing people and reviewing images captured by video surveillance cameras in the area, Police Chief James Batelli said.

The township Fire Department Evidence Recovery Team also retrieved various pieces of evidence thrown into the Ramapo River, he said.

Before long, he said, detectives had obtained arrest warrants for 66-year-old Harold Molt Jr.

Mott had been living on property on lalifax Road and also used addresses in Fulton and Rooseveltown, N.Y., the chief said.

Detective Sgt. Kevin Hebert, assisted by township patrol officers, arrested Mott on Wednesday as he drove his Toyota two-door pickup truck on Ramapo Valley Road, Batelli said Thursday.

The pickup was impounded, and a judge ordered Mott held without bail in the Bergen County Jail pending a detention hearing.

Charges include nearly a half-dozen illegal weapons counts, as well as criminal mischief.

NOTE: A previous version of this story referred to Spencer as a member of the Ramapough Lenape tribe. "An attorney for the Ramapough Lenape Tribe has advised me that Mr. Molt is not a member of the their tribe," Batelli said Friday morning.
