The No. 51 ranking by Safewise.com is "another badge of honor for our community," Mayor Bill LaForet said Wednsday.

"The first to thank is our CALEA Nationally Accredited Mahwah Police Department who work around the clock 24/7 to keep our community safe," LaForet said. "We have the finest, dedicated officers anywhere. When you call, they respond immediately."

"With more open space than any other town in Bergen County," Safewise.com says, Mahwah is a "commuter haven" with "a lot to offer."

"Public town activities include recreational sports for young kids like soccer and baseball and activities like art and yoga in the Senior Center to keep the elderly citizens engaged," it says.

Safewise compiled crime statistics from the FBI and conducted its own research on public safety public health, and educational offerings to determine its rankings.
