Detectives Michael Grassi and Eric Larsen were on patrol when they spotted a silver Hyundai SUV in the fast food restaurant lot, Police Chief James N. Batelli said Monday.
The driver – identified as Terrence Hulse, 33, of Fallsburgh, N.Y. -- “was observed loitering in the parking lot, exiting the vehicle numerous times and looking at multiple cell phones,” he said.
Soon after, a BMW sedan pulled up next to Hulse’s SUV and the trunk popped open, the chief said.
The driver – identified as 24-year-old Stanley Edwards of Paterson -- “retrieved [a plastic bag] from the trunk and exchanged it with Hulse for a package of bundled currency,” he said.
As the detectives approached, Hulse threw the bag under the car, Batelli said.
Edwards tried to run toward the highway, but the detectives grabbed him -- as cash scattered on the ground, the chief said.
They also arrested Hulse and a passenger from the BMW identified as Tiffany Reardon, also 24.
The package contained 450 bags of heroin and 10 bags of crack cocaine, Batelli said.
All three were charged with various drug offenses.
A judge ordered Hulse and Edwards held on the high bail in the Bergen County Jail. Reardon was released without bail pending a court hearing.
