Members of Mahwah Rescue 1 cut the fiberglass javelin with a hydraulic Jaws of Life cutter so that it could fit in the ambulance while the victim was transported to The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, Police Chief James Batelli told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Removing it could have worsened the bleeding, he said.

The 57-year-old judge, from the town of Olean in upstate New York, was working the 2015 Roadrunner Invitational when he was struck around 11:30 a.m.

“He saw the javelin coming, tried to get out of the way but tripped on some rocks and fell backward,” Batelli said this afternoon. “He was conscious and alert for the ride to the hospital.”

Responders included Mahwah Ambulance, Valley paramedics, Mahwah police and college public safety officers, along with the firefighters.
