The bear -- estimated at about 250 pounds -- was with seen with her cub in the Rio Vista section of the township first just before 10:30 a.m. in the area of Tudor Rose and then just after noon on Walsh Drive, police said.

She "attempted to remove the cover off of an outdoor grill and, when unsuccessful, approached the rear door of a residence," police said in an alert issued to residents.

"When the homeowner went to make sure the door was secure, the black bear raised up on its hind legs before running off," they said.

Although black bears are common in the area, one rearing on his or her hind legs signals danger and warrants extreme protection, police said.
