DWI eyed in Mahwah crash that seriously injured bicyclist

ONLY ON CVP: Police suspect a Mahwah man was intoxicated when his pickup truck struck and seriously injured a Rockland County bicyclist late this afternoon.

The driver was taken to a local hospital for “testing” and was expected to be with intoxicated assault by auto, a law enforcement source told CLIFFVIEW PILOT after the pickkup struck the Suffern cyclist on Ramapo Valley Road (Route 202) just after 4:30 p.m.

Mahwah EMS and paramedics from the Valley Hospital in Ridgewood took the victim to the grounds of the Sheraton Crossroads Hotel, where AirMed One picked him up and flew him to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center a little less than an hour later, they said.

Details were still being gathered by investigators, Mahwah Police Chief James Batelli told CLIFFVIEW PILOT early this evening.

The pickup was apparently making a left onto North Railroad Avenue from southbound Ramapo Valley Road when it struck the bicyclist, who was headed toward Ramapo Valley Road, the chief said.

The Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification was collecting evidence.
