Glenn B. Slater had just filled the water tank in a dumpster he was carrying on his 2005 Sterling truck when he “completed a curve in the roadway” headed towards Route 17 and “lost control of the vehicle…for yet-undetermined reasons” at 6:35 a.m., Batelli said.
The truck ended up on its driver’s side on top of Slater, who operated Slater Well and Pump Service, a family business out of Hewitt.
Hospital paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene soon after.
The dumpster and water bed tank came off, leaving the dumpster in the middle of Stag Hill Road about a quarter-mile from the crest, Batelli said.
There were no witnesses, the chief said, adding that his investigators were seeking witnesses who saw Slater before he set out down Stag Hill Road.

Mahwah police were joined at the scene by township firefighters, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Fatal Accident Investigation Unit, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification and the New Jersey State Police Truck Inspection Unit, Batell said.
