Black Bear Passing Through Keeps Ramsey Schoolchildren Inside

RAMSEY — Hubbard Elementary School students in Ramsey were kept in side Friday morning while authorities waited for a black bear spotted in the area to move on.

Bear sightings have increased in the area in recent months.

Bear activity has increased in the area.

Over the past two months, authorities have captured and killed five bears that they said were following hikers in the Ramapo Valley Reservation and the Ramapo Mountain State Forest.

Officials eventually reopened the trails after several weeks.
