A Bergenfield police officer got a surprise when he spotted a man darting in and out of traffic just after midnight yesterday morning and then found his car in an intersection with the engine still running.

Eladio Torres, 21, of Pearl River was charged with DWI after being arrested by Officer David Keelor near the corner of West Clinton and South Washington avenues, Bergenfield Detective Capt. Cathy Madalone said.

Torres, whose 1997 black Ford Thunderbird was parked in the roadway, told Keelor he’d just driven from Mahwah and was lost, Madalone said.

The officer “detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from [Torres’] mouth,” the captain said.

Torres received summonses not only for DWI and not having an insurance card but also for failing to use the crosswalk, she said.

He was scheduled for a June 12 Municipal Court appearance to answer the charges.
