Mahwah police summoned their county counterparts after being called by the 33-year-old, Chestnut Ridge (NY) woman’s worried family just before 10 p.m. She had told them that she’d become disoriented and lost her way but was following a gas pipeline in the preserve.
Mahwah firefighters headed out in ATVs, while authorities also notified the director of the Girls Scout Camp Glen Gray on the reservation.
Meanwhile, BCPD Officers Daniel Antinori, Sara Toro and Alex Echevarria walked the path to the entrance of Camp Yaw Paw for about a mile and a half — with search dog Harry — when they reached the woman on her cellphone.
“While on the phone with them, she advised the officers that she was able to see their flashlights,” BCPD Lt. Robert Espinosa told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning.
“New Jersey Search and Rescue were on scene and later conducted a medical evaluation of the lost hiker, who was released without incident,” he said.
With more than 4,000 acres on the edge of the Highlands region, the reservation is Bergen County’s largest park area.
