"We're not out to ruin anybody's Fourth of July," Bergen County Undersheriff Brian Smith told those gathered at the Law and Public Safety complex, "but we feel there's enough legal fireworks [displays] set off by experts."
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that fireworks were involved in an estimated 10,500 injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments during calendar year 2014.
New York Giant defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul had his index finger amputated after a fireworks mishap nearly one year ago.
New Jersey law prohibits the possession or manufacturing of consumer fireworks – including bottle rockets, Roman candles, and sparklers -- Lt. John LaDuca noted.
To show the power of the explosives – in this case, the equivalent of a cherry bomb – a team of professionals annihilated the watermelon using confiscated fireworks.
"We really just want to let everyone know how dangerous these fireworks are and how dangerous they can be," LaDuca said.
