Surveillance cameras captured images of 25-year-old Justin Treadwell breaking into the Hamilton Avenue basement to steal the bicycles and then returning for the truck around 7 o’clock this morning, Deputy Police Chief Martin Kahn told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

A tipster led police to the 8800 block of Fourth Avenue in North Bergen, where Treadwell left it, Kahn said.

He lighted some paper inside in an apparent attempt to torch the vehicle, but the fire went out, he said.

Hours later, a patrol officer spotted Treadwell at Anderson and Fairview Avenues and took him into custody, the deputy chief said. He was wearing the same clothing as in the surveillance video, he said.

Treadwell was being held on $50,000 bail in the county jail, charged with auto theft and four counts of burglary.

Additional charges of arson and destruction of evidence were expected.
